Brockport’s annual Winter Serenades music series begins soon. These Sunday afternoon performances begin at 3:00pm on January 21, February 4, February 18, and March 3. They are hosted by the Village of Brockport and fully funded by generous donations from local community members and businesses. The Winter events are all held at the historic St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on the corner of Main and State Streets. They are followed by an opportunity to visit with friends and musicians at a reception in the church hall upstairs.
St. Luke’s generously provides a live-stream of the performances that can be viewed from anywhere so you can attend virtually if unable to attend in person. The YouTube live-stream can be accessed at stlukesbrockport.org, the church’s website.
January 21 – Michael Lasser, Alan Jones and Jessica Ann Best return by popular demand. This year they will focus on songs of George and Ira Gershwin.
Lasser, author of several books and the former host of a long running public radio program with music from the Great American Songbook says that the two brothers are among the greatest American songwriters. “They loved each other deeply, and often wrote in the same room at a piano and a card table. They quarreled now and then but also helped one other past a snag in the music or the words. They were New Yorkers from birth, and their songs have an urban, even a New York, feel.”
Join Michael Lasser, Jessica Ann Best, and Alan Jones for a program they call “Sweet and Low Down: The Gershwins’ New York.”
February 4 – The Laura Dubin Trio is a popular Rochester group that plays great jazz and much more. Personable and talented, they appeal to a wide audience
February 18 – another Michael Lasser presentation, with two Rochester singers new to Brockport: Connie Fredericks-Malone and Reuben J. Tapp. The special program is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance.
March 3 – Another returning favorite, by popular demand – Chris Wilson concludes the winter series. Chris’s voice and presence glow inside St Luke’s.
As always, no tickets, no admission charge, and an opportunity to meet after for friendly talk and light refreshments.
