Crane Hogan is still expecting end of June for bridge opening date.  DOT has been informed again that Smith Street bridge rehabilitation is to start the first week of July and must completed by the beginning of September in order for the Village to secure the federal grant money for its rehabilitation.
Crews have been down in the pits doing electrical work.  Bridge handrails are assembled and are being painted.  A streak of good weather will help with completing the painting.  Crane Hogan is working to clean up what they don’t need at the site.  The paving of the parking lot on the north side of the canal will be one of the last steps and has not been scheduled yet.  It’s preferable to do paving while the bridge is still closed but the priority is getting the bridge open to traffic and, if need be, paving can take place after the bridge is open.  The bridge will be raised on May 14th for the navigation season and remain in the up position as bridge work continues.
I raised the issue of bad potholes on Main Street downtown.  The repaving of Main Street has been delayed and the DOT bridge engineers are not sure when it will be scheduled but will find out.  The Arts Festival Planning Committee is concerned about the condition of the road and the thousands of visitors expected for the August 9-10 festival.  DPW supplied photos of the pothole damage which have been passed on to the DOT.  Crane Hogan will fill the worst potholes.  More information to follow with next update in two weeks.
